Learn More about Tierra del Fuego

Called "Land of Fire" because the first European explorers who traveled to this land claimed they saw fires moving in the darkness. It was in fact the Amerindians (Selknam, Yagans, Alakalufs, Manekenks) who warmed themselves with fire during the night. Unfortunately, there is little left of the original people today, following an anti-Indian genocidal campaign carried out between 1880 and the 1920s.

Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago shared between Argentina and Chile. Argentina claims the attachment to the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands. It is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Magellan (named after one of the first European navigators who travelled through the territory). Its capital, Ushuaia, is its largest city. It is also the southernmost city in the world.

Paradise of fauna...

Visiting Tierra del Fuego promises the observation of a great quantity of animal species.

The territory is home to many species of birds, marine animals (such as penguins, dolphins, sharks, orcas and whales). The archipelago hosts terrestrial animals such as the Magellanic fox, guanaco, beavers and merinos (whose breeding is the basis of the province's economy) used both for their meat and wool. If you have the opportunity to fish, don't hesitate to go to Rio Grande (North) and/or Lago Fagnano (South) which are some of the best places in the world for trout and salmon fishing. You light catch the Lithodes santolla, the world biggest crab! If you like king penguins, you should book an excursion to the Parque Pinguïno Rey or at Puntas Arenas and you will be able to observe them in their best habitat.

... and flora

The archipelago is made up of many islands, most of which have numerous fjords. With a total surface area of about 68 000km², it stretches for nearly 400km from north to south and 700km from east to west. The Big Island is the largest in Tierra del Fuego and measures more than 48,000 km². To the east, there are endless plains and to the west, mountainous peaks such as the famous Mount Darwin, 2,488 meters high in the Cordillera Darwin.

Most of the islands are formed by arid, black, vertical and wild rocks. The mountains, on the other hand, are covered with snow from 1000 meters of altitude. You can see dark forests but also glaciers that sometimes flow into the sea.

The mountains of the archipelago offer various and pleasant sports. From Ushuaia, skiing is practicable from June to October, especially on the Cerro Castor (the beaver hill), in the North East of Ushuaia. Hiking is very popular in this immense area. One can enjoy the plains, lakes, forests and glaciers (one must be well equipped of course). The Laguna Esmeralda lake (less than 30 minutes north of the capital) is famous for its beauty and calm. A two-hour hike will take you there. There are at least 10 preserved natural areas on the archipelago, all of them of comparable beauty to this lake. Among them, the Tierra del Fuego National Park (with its highest point at 1,470 meters), the Isla de los Estados Provincial Reserve and Playa Larga. And on a calm day, you'll surely enjoy a sailboat or boat ride on the Beagle Channel to Isla Navarino.

Culture, history, fauna and flora are highlighted in beautiful museums of the archipelago, including the following: Estancia Harberton, Museo Marítimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia and Acatushun Museum (former prison, often referred to as the "end of the world penitentiary").

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers planning a trip to Tierra del Fuego

How to get to Tierra del Fuego National Park?

The Tierra del Fuego National Park is located 12 km west of Ushuaia, from where you will have several transportation options.

From the capital, the Southern Fuegian Railway, also called the "train from the end of the world", crosses the Pico valley and takes you to the park in an original way. It is a popular attraction for tourists.

Many bus lines take you to the park from Ushuaia. They all leave from the parking lot at the corner of Maipu Avenue and Juana Fadul street (near the port). Don't forget to ask at the front desk of your hotel as they may have a shuttle service!

If you prefer to go at your own pace, you can also rent a car and drive there by yourself, via the RN3, which will take you less than half an hour. If you don't want to drive, you can easily find a cab. This will allow you to take some nice pictures on the way.

Good to know: the park covers a total area of 63,000 hectares, but only 2,000 are accessible to the public, in order to conserve its ecosystem. Visitors can hike on marked trails.

King penguins are found in several places of the archipelago, but more abundantly in Puntas Arenas (West of the Magellan Strait) which is part of the Magellan National Reserve, as well as in Parque Pinguïno Rey (East of the Magellan Strait). They will be mixed with Magellanic penguins on Isla Magdalena.

In order to have more information about these animals, do not hesitate to ask about the organized tours.
